Gorgona Anthropocene

The Anthropocene is commonly understood as a terrestrial epoch — marked by plastic, waste, and irreversible traces. Yet human presence does not stop at the surface of the planet. It continues into orbit.

The first human-made waste in space was left in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik 1. Since then, Earth’s orbit has gradually turned into an invisible landfill of technological progress. As of January 2019, it is estimated that more than 128 million debris fragments smaller than 1 cm, approximately 900,000 fragments between 1 and 10 cm, and at least 37,000 objects larger than 10 cm occupy near-Earth space.

Gorgon of the Anthropocene explores the transformation of technological waste into an orbital ecology — a space that belongs neither to Earth nor to humanity, yet still bears the traces of our presence. Her body is composed of debris: fragments of technologies that once served human purposes and now exist as bodies without mission or clearly defined future.
